Since no one else appears to have posted a reply, I will offer my thoughts
in the hope that it might help you somewhat.
My advice for this short haul, especially at night, would be 80m, hands down.
You would most likely still copy W1AW quite well at this range on 40m but
skip tends to lengthen out on that band at night, while 80m will usually
provide good coverage from local stations on out to several hundred or
even several thousand miles (depending on propagation).
